History Sanshin was introduced from China some 600 years ago when Okinawa was an independent Ryukyu kingdom.

Originally reserved for entertaining the royal court, the instrument was eventually taken up by the general public, and remains very popular to this day.

Okinawan traders introduced sanshin to Osaka, Japan. sometime around 1560 where it became shamisen.
