Perhaps the best known fish species in Okinawa is called “Gurukun” in Okinawan or “Takasago” in Japanese.

Gurukun are abundant off Okinawa’s coast. They sport vivid turquoise, greenish-blue colors and reddish pectoral fin and belly. They are most commonly enjoyed deep fried or “karage.”
