Ryukyu dog is a native breed, medium in size, and looks very much like wild dogs, but on the contrary, they are mild-mannered and loving pets.

They were originally bred for hunting wild boar. At one time it was thought that they had become extinct but were rediscovered. They are recognized as a prefectural treasure.
