Island Shallot, better known in Okinawa as “shima rakkyo” is a small onion-like vegetable that is often used as a snack, especially suited to accompany beer or awamori in the myriads of izakayas on the island.

It is served lightly fried with salt and bonito flakes, or deep fried as tempura. It is also served pickled and often used as garnishing.
