Makeman

makemanOkinawa’s foreign residents often call Makeman hardware stores ‘Monkey Shops’ because the shop’s logo features a monkey with a wrench in his hand.

The shop’s catchphrase actually says the shops are “DIY center (Makeman) for habitation and livelihood.” They sell a large variety of products ranging from home electronics, pet food, gardening items, and sports equipment to DIY products, of course. The point is, whatever you need for home improvement, they have it.

Makeman was founded Oct. 1, 1976 in Urasoe where they have their headquarters to this day. On Okinawa’s main island they now have branch stores in Nago, Gushikawa, Mihama, Urasoe, Tomigusuku, Naha, and Nishihara. They also have stores on Miyako and Ishigaki islands.

A 100-yen shop Seria incorporated in the stores is popular among foreign and local residents alike. Makeman business hours are from 9:30 to 20:00 every day except on New Year’s Day that is the only day of the year they are closed.
