Mongol 800 is the one of the most popular Okinawan Rock bands. The three-member band was founded in 1998 when all members were still students in Urasoe High School. When they were in a university, they released the album “Message” that was a big hit that propelled the band to fame in all Japan, and they became a major influence on the music scene.

The band’s name, Mongol 800, has no relation to Mongolia or Mongol people, they just gave the name ‘Mongol 800’ to their band as a random thought, the band members say.
