Hamahiga Island is located 4km away from Katsuren peninsula. According to Okinawan mythology, Hamahiga Island is the place where Okinawan civilization was born.

Chipped stone tools were excavated in the cave on this island, thought to be the place where the creator of the Ryukyu Island lives. The means of livelihood of the people on the island are fishing and agriculture. Beautiful beaches also attract tourists these days.
