The mausoleum is located on a hill to the west of Shuri Castle. The mausoleum was built by King Sho-Shin to transfer King Sho-En’s ashes from Miagemori. All the kings of Sho dynasty except King Sho-Tei are buried here. The mausoleum faces north, and a stonewall divides it into the inner and outer court. According to the tradition the center room called Shiruhirashi was for placing the remains before the bone washing. The room on the left was for the successive kings and queens, and the room on the right was for the princes and princesses. As a mausoleum of kings in Okinawa, Tamaudun is designated as a very important cultural site.
