Kita-Daito Island is located 380 km east of Okinawa Island. Mostly made of coral and limestone, it is the easternmost island of Okinawa prefecture. In 1904, Hanzaemon Tamaki, an immigrant from Hachijou Island, began to develop Kita-Daito and started phosphorous mining, and sugar cane cultivation. Sugar cane fields spread all over the island, which is the most advanced mechanized agriculture region in Okinawa. In the past, some people on Okinawa worshipped Kita-Daito as the land of god.
