Ishiganto is a small stone slabs you can find in Y or T-intersection around Okinawa, The stone is inscribed with three Chinese characters meaning to ward evil spirits. The characters ishi, meaning stone, gan, which issues a challenge to outsiders, and tou, meaning hit, onto the tablets.

By Chinese folklure, evil spirits are limited to movement only in straight lines. Because of the way homes are constructed, ishiganto are essential in keeping evil spirits from wandering inside.
