Coconut Crab

Coconut crab is a species of terrestrial hermit crab and the largest land-living crustacean in the world. Its pincers are very strong and could cut a human finger easily.

Coconut crabs eat mostly fleshy fruit, nuts and seeds, including coconuts and adan, and also about anything else, even rotting remains of animals. They are also called robber crabs or palm thieves because of their habit of grabbing away shiny items like silver dishes or pots from a house.

They habit a wide area through Indian Ocean and the Pacific through Micronesia. In Okinawa, they are common throughout Miyako and Yaeyama archipelago, and some of are living on Okinawa main-island, too. In the past, people hunted them for food causing a threat of extinction. Currently, in some areas coconut crab is declared an endangered species.
