Tonaki Island

Tonaki Island is located 58 km northwest of Naha City, and Tonaki Village is the second smallest village in Okinawa Prefecture. The island faces Aguni Island to north, Kerama islands to south, and Kume Island to west. Thus, Tonaki is located just in the center of the three islands. Tonaki was long time ago separated into two islands but sand eventually accumulated between the two islands and united them into one. There are several shell mounds and historical heritage sites on the island. Because it is on the route to China, a watchtower was built there. Since the 20th century, the skipjack fishing became the main industry, but now coastal sport fishing and diving tours give livelihood to many local residents.
