Miyagi Island

Miyagi island (Miyagijima), located between Henza and Ikei islands, was called “Takahanari” before. The island is about 100m high, and has four villages Uehara, Miyagi, Tobaru and Ikemi. Shigumu and Takamine ruins indicate that people have lived on the island since ancient times. During the Ryukyu Kingdom era the island was used as an exile for criminals.  In 1974, Henza and Miyagi islands were connected by a landfill, and to Yokatsu peninsula through the road-on-the sea. The main agricultural product on Miyagi is sugar cane.
